hey

well not much time to write. work is a bear around my throat and I'm a kicking caribou.

maybe I'm the bear and the cubs are my students.

either way shit is getting busy. I estimate that in about one month I wont' be too busy at all. things will level out into a nice routine and I'll basically have the understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing. however right now I don't really get it. students have not registered for classes thus I don't know what I'm teaching yet. at least one ceramics class and at least one foundational art class. I might also be teaching printmaking. if I would go back to my past self, say 3-4 years ago, and said, 'self, you will soon be teaching printmaking in new mexico,' I would say, 'future self, you're nuts.'

here's what I need to do, in list form, mostly to help myself understand it

>clean and prepare the studio
>order supplies for 3 classes
>write 3 syllabi for 3 mystery classes
>glaze and fire 150+ pots that we made this summer
>figure out what the hell is wrong with my glazes
>mix shop-slips
>get my contract figured out
>learn how to manage money
>get a job at the museum
>buy a laptop?
>prepare my notes and speech for a powerpoint about AmeriCorps that I'll be giving twice next week (molly produced the powerpoint with my words, a beautiful show)
>prepare notes for a presentation about arts integration (with Amy and Joe C)
>start classes

this is all in the next 1-2 weeks. after that I'm gold.

not much to say about minnesota. most everyone who reads this blog was there with me so you know what went down. don't have any pictures cause I didn't bring cami. here are some highlights.

>luce with k & j first night. great re-intro to old haunts
>cable tv on a mammoth screen
>brunch with my old neighbors/colleagues, zach and tasha. they were recently in central america. we ate together at french meadow, where tasha works and where I randomly ran in to them after getting shut out at al's.
>walking around the east bank, prospect park, and visiting the clay center and talking with helke.
>urban bean with ben and brian
>goiing up north to parents' playing mucho golfo, going out on the lake, actually natural and large open bodies of water--strange, swimming in that luxurious and clear cold water, feeling moisture in the air, in everything, the color green on foliage abundant, getting real fed on and on
>reconnecting with stratti and ampi
>seeing terri, janet, and travis and their new place
>going to ponsford and shooting a shotgun--turns out I can hit clay pigeons pretty well
>blowing up firecrackers and homemade bombs. that is fun
>going to loon and seeing marsh, dave, and mari. tossing an old lady into the lake, no that was just sad, woops! loon was beautiful though
>hanging out with carter
>seeing adam edenbot's new mansion, not kidding, mansion
>hanging out with kip and sonja
>eating real good chinese food at village wok
>eating real good japanese foood at sakura
>eating real good thai food at sawatdee with molly's family
>seeing reese, the wonder-baby

oh jeez there was so much it was a really great trip but now it seems like a dream that I didn't really experience--only way I know I actually did it is because when I think of it I have a actual and palpable sense of restfulness which I now draw on to remind myself that work is work and rest is rest. also I now have my amp at home so that proves it.

also we went to carlsabd caverns last weekend, a spot worthy of the title 'wonder.' lesser known by far but perhaps more wonderous depending on the weather is a small place called sitting bull falls. words can't describe the desert oasis that awaits you here in remote southeast new mexico. not exaggerating: 150 ft. moss and fern-covered waterfalls cascading over sheer rock faces onto a riparian oasis littered with marsh grasses and several crystal-clear wading pools, some up to 9 feet deep and larger than a residential pool with rock diving platforms along the sides. jesus h. this place is out of site and when new mexico all 97+ degs of her comes lumping in on your soul like a deep session of water-boarding you must think of sitting bull falls and know that it's out there waiting for you. sitting bull.
